Is it Time for a Union?
Now, more than ever, employees in food production facilities need protection and support at work.
The Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers (BCTGM) International Union led the charge to ensure its members were properly protected and compensated during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
BCTGM members making buns and rolls, bread, flour, sugar, yogurt and cereal were deemed “essential,” and have continued to manufacture food to help sustain American families.
Today’s workplace has been altered by the aftermath of a global pandemic, and it is more vital than ever to have a voice on the job. While the future seems uncertain, workers in our industries are still a vital link in America’s food supply.
What happens when you deserve more money to justify working in hazardous conditions?
…or need a day off to take care of a sick loved one?
…or your employer has sold the company?
…or new equipment takes over your job?
…or working conditions on the job endanger your health?
It is usually impossible—and always difficult—for an individual worker to go one-on-one with an employer when it’s necessary to protect your livelihood. The president of the company may not even be located in your community. Your supervisor knows you need to work, and the supervisor has the final word.
One person’s voice just isn’t strong or loud enough to influence a large, impersonal organization.
JOINING the BCTGM is the most effective way for workers to raise their wages, benefits and secure a safe and healthy workplace through a negotiated collective bargaining agreement.
Just like you, BCTGM members work hard every day and are concerned about the future. They want to work and live in safe and healthy communities. They want respect on the job for the hard work they do every day, and the dignity of a collective bargaining agreement that protects their rights.
